The Al-Mutamid Route

The Al-Mutamid Route serves to remind us of the man who was known as the poet king, who was born in Beja and became king of the Taifa of Seville. A passionate and erudite connoisseur of music and poetry, his career path led him to become governor of Silves prior to becoming lord of Seville.

This route consists of a captivating itinerary that begins in Portugal and comprises two trajectories which encompass the south-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula. Very different landscapes make this route one of the most interesting and varied ones, not only as regards monumental heritage but also in terms of natural spaces. You can feel a historical continuity between the hamlets in Alentejo and the Algarve and those of western Andalusia; indeed, at one time, this entire area was known as al-Andalus.

The Route begins in Lisbon, alongside the Atlantic Ocean, and finishes in Seville, where this dynasty reigned. The section that we are presenting here begins in the town of Aljezur which, during the Muslim period, was almost an island surrounded by sea, and ends in Cortegana, in the heart of the Serra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Nature Park.
