Way of St. James

The Ways of St. James as paths of pilgrimage date back to the Middle Ages, starting in the 9th century; their aim was to venerate the remains of the apostle Saint James the Greater, whose tomb is located in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

In the 20th century, the ways were declared European Cultural Routes and some of them World Heritage Sites.

Of the different historical routes that exist, the Portuguese Way has various branches in different parts of the country.

Starting in the Algarve, you can either set off from Faro on the Central Portuguese Way or from Tavira on the Eastern Portuguese Way.

Whether you are motivated by faith, by spirituality, a desire for adventure or some other reason, choose your route, get information from the pilgrims’ associations, and Happy Walking!
