The Algarve is a land of many charms. Long recognised as a top destination for restful beach holidays, the Algarve has also been making its mark over the years as the best choice for every kind of golfer. Proof of this are the prizes acknowledging the Algarve as a golfing destination. In 2005, the San Lorenzo and The Old Course featured on the Golf Digest magazine’s list of the 100 best golf courses in the world.
2000 was the year in which the Algarve was voted the World’s Best Golfing Destination by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), a title which the region won for a second time in 2006.
In 2013, the Golf World magazine included six of the Algarve’s golf courses in the list of the 100 best courses in mainland Europe. Monte Rei, Onyria Palmares, San Lorenzo, Quinta do Lago Sul, Oceânico Faldo and Oceânico Old Course were the courses highlighted in the biennial ranking.
At national level, the Onyria Palmares course was recognised as the Best Golf Course in the country for five consecutive times, during the “Publituris Portugal Travel Awards”.
And in 2014, the Algarve was voted the Best European Golfing Destination of the Year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).
In 2017, the region once again won the title of Best Golfing Destination in Mainland Europe, due to the excellent value for money that it offers golfers. The Algarve has been awarded this prize three times by the British magazine Today’s Golfer.
Portugal was also voted Best European Golfing Destination and World’s Best Golfing Destination since the first edition (2014) of the World Golf Awards (WGA), which are considered as the “Oscars” of tourism.
