Alongside the EN2 national road and, more precisely, at km 722 in the very heart of São Brás de Alportel, stands the Casa Memória da EN2 (EN2 Memory House), occupying the building that, for many years, housed the 8th Section of the Faro District Road Maintenance Division.
In this little building, bursting at the seams with history, the municipality of São Brás de Alportel pays tribute to the EN2 National Road, its lands and its people. It reminisces about the history of limestone extraction, to which this transitional "Barrocal" area is highly indebted, and about the men who maintained the roads, the old "cantoneiros", as they were called, whose work kept the area alive through successive generations.
On a guided tour of the space, you will have the chance to see and learn about tools, materials and working methods relating to the construction and maintenance of Portugal's longest road. Covering a distance of 739.26 kilometres, it is the third longest in the world and the only one in Europe that takes you all the way from the top to the bottom of a country.
