At the Salinas do Grelha in Bela Mandil, Olhão, traditional techniques are used to harvest sea salt and flower of salt. Visitors taking a guided tour will learn all about how the salt forms and is harvested. Alongside the historical and cultural component, nature also plays a starring role in the activity, given that the saltpans are located in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature Park and are a habitat for various marine birds that may be seen during a visit.
Tours are available all year round, but the primary season for salt production is from May to September. During this time, visitors can also try "Dead Sea" bathing in a lake covering some 2,000 m2. The high concentration of salt in the water makes it possible to enjoy a relaxing float in the water, among other benefits.
