The “barrocal” is the transitional area lying between the Algarve coast and the uplands. It consists of fairly flat terrain and limestone hills, both covered in bushy vegetation and a variety of trees, where the Mediterranean influence is unmistakable. The clayey fertile lands of the barrocal are ideal for mixed dryland orchards consisting of carob, fig, almond and olive trees.
The barrocal is also home to many species of animals, including a large variety of birdlife. Nestling between the hills, valleys and streams are tiny hamlets, villages and towns with a wealth of history, traditions and customs that the populations are determined to preserve with pride.
Because of the geography and the terrain, with an average altitude ranging between 100 m and 300 m, cycling through the barrocal is one of the best ways to explore this part of the Algarve.
