Level 3

Riding in Monchique is synonymous with experiencing nature in its purest and wildest state. This route, which is obviously somewhat demanding due to the type of terrain in the municipality, is one that takes you through areas of great natural beauty. You start out along the main road leading to Alferce. Although this is a national road, traffic is light and you can admire the view over the northern part of the municipality. In Alferce turn southwards, riding uphill towards Picota. This is the second-highest point in the Algarve after Fóia, the most-visited place in the municipality and one of the most popular among tourists and residents. Even though this route doesn’t take you to Picota’s highest point, the scenery from up here is absolutely stunning. Riding down into the village of Fornalha, the route takes you up and down along a country road with a very uneven surface on your way to Caldas de Monchique, which is famous for its medicinal waters. The return to Monchique is somewhat demanding, as it is uphill all the way, with Fóia always on the horizon.
