Riding the waters on the wings of the wind
Windsurfers will find the Algarvian beaches perfect for the sport.
On the Vicentine Coast, strong winds and flat seas at the Martinhal, Tonel and Meia Praia beaches are ideal places to practise slalom, free ride and free style varieties of the sport.
Farther west, in the Portimão area, Praia da Rocha is ideal for windsurfing and free riding, since it is one of the best regatta centres for European formula windsurfing. It is a magnificent area for riding the waves in winter. Alvor beach and the Alvor Estuary are also perfect for free ride, slalom and free style windsurfing.
Other areas with good facilities for practising the sport are: in Armação de Pêra - Angrinha, Ferragudo, Pescadores and Nova; in Albufeira – Pescadores (Fishermen’s Beach), Forte de São João, Maria Luísa, Olhos de Água and Falésia; in Loulé - Vale do Lobo, Dunas Douradas, Garrão and Ancão; the barrier island beaches off Faro; in Olhão – the islands of Fuzeta and Armona; and in Tavira - Cabanas, Altura and Adão e Eva. Equipment hire is available at some of these.
Novices can first learn on simulators and then hire boards to take their first steps in this addictive sport on Ilha Deserta (Desert Island) in Faro.
