Enjoy the sea to the full
Many Algarvian beaches have suggestions for you if you wish to have an activity-oriented holiday, even if you do not have equipment. Tavira and Lagos offer the best possibilities for such holidays.
Tavira Island is one enormous sandy beach with calm seas and good amenities for water sports. To get to the island, there is a regular boat service from Quatro Águas or Tavira. Once you get there, you can try pedal boating in ‘gaivota’ pedal boats, canoeing in double or individual canoes, riding bananas, waterskiing, surf biking (balancing on a skateboard set on top of a moving bicycle), and windsurfing, as well as going for guided boat trips.
A similar range of activities can be found on Cabanas Island. Despite being only 70 metres wide, it is seven kilometres long, meaning there is plenty of room in which to enjoy the beach.
One of the best-known beaches in the Western Algarve, Meia Praia is a four-kilometre-long stretch of sand running from the Lagos Marina to the Alvor Estuary. Of great natural beauty, this coast is formed by cliffs, rocky outcrops in the sea and many natural caves. It is a very popular beach for diving, but holidaymakers preferring to stay on the surface can go pedal boating in ‘gaivotas’, kayaking, windsurfing, riding bananas or take a guided boat trip.
