Accessible Beaches

The Algarve has 47 beaches that, in 2017, were distinguished with the "Accessible Beach – Beach for Everyone Award" promoted by the National Institute for Rehabilitation, the Portuguese Environment Agency and Turismo de Portugal (Portuguese Tourism Board). The aim is to ensure that beach and bathing areas offer a series of conditions that allow them to be used by everyone, regardless of age or mobility issues.

To receive the "Accessible Beach – Beach for Everyone" award, a beach must offer:

  • easy pedestrian access;
  • organised parking with spaces for vehicles serving disabled drivers or passengers;
  • level access to the bathing area or access via a ramp or mechanical means;
  • walkways on the sand and accessible toilets and first-aid post
