Reliving the past
The Algarve has a rich historical heritage, from across centuries, and it celebrates it with festivals which evoke the exploits of the Discoveries, the development of Arabic culture, or the mediaeval period. The region’s historical monuments form the backdrop to the celebrations, which bring to life the castles and town walls as they would have been at that time.
In July, the Noites da Moura Encantada (Nights of the Enchanted Moorish Maiden) in the picturesque town of Cacela-a-Velha (Vila Real de Santo António) re-enact life during the Moorish period by recreating a traditional Arab market (souk) with music, dancing and typical food. There, arts and crafts exhibitions display the work of Algarvian artisans, heirs to ancient Arab craftsmanship.
In August, the mediaeval period is recreated in Silves with a Mediaeval Fair, while Castro Marim celebrates its Mediaeval Days in September. Grand parades of costumes of the era, jousts and tournaments, traditional games, merchants and craftsmen all serve to bring real history colourfully to life.
Between October and November, Lagos commemorates the Age of Discovery with a magnificent parade and 16th Century fair. This is called the Festival dos Descobrimentos, which includes food from the different “discovered” regions, exhibitions, guided visits of the heritage centre, talks, competitions, and also a tribute commemorating the death of Prince Henry, the Navigator.
