Fascination of the night sky
The scintillating stars, the shape of the constellations and the intense brilliance of the planets present beautiful images. The Algarve provides outstanding conditions to observe the night sky which is almost always clear and transparent.
Visitors can begin by enjoying the sunset. From the Sagres cliffs where the sea and the horizon merge, the disappearance of the sun into the water is memorable.
At nightfall, it is best to find a sheltered spot where the darkness of the night sky is stronger, for example Foia in Monchique, Ponta de Piedade in Lagos, or the Alga Seco area in Lagoa. Other good areas are Cerro de S. Miguel (St Michael’s Hill) or the road from Olhão to Santa Catarina, or the lookout on Vale da Asseca, near Tavira.
For a clear view, there is an observatory in Tavira, the Observatório Astronómico, which is an easy-going scientific centre which provides visitors with optimum conditions, equipment and information to explore the cosmos, or simply to enjoy the Algarvian night sky.
Even if you do not recognise the stars or know the names of constellations, observing the Algarve sky is an entirely different experience that will stay forever in your memory.
