Open Air Markets

Open Air Markets

Regional products in picturesque settings

If you prefer a different shopping experience, open air markets are a great alternative.

Whether it is in modest stalls, under sophisticated awnings, or even in straw beds full of lettuces picked at dawn, what is on offer is diverse and displayed amidst the hustle and bustle of traditional markets which all towns, cities and villages run periodically.

In this busy and colourful atmosphere you can discover almost everything, especially delicious flavours direct from village kitchens or the countryside , which can make a difference to any kitchen – scented herbs, vegetables fresh with the morning dew, fruit free from packaging and with their own fragrance, homemade sausages, and above all the ever present dried fruits.  This is an ideal place to become acquainted with (and acquire) local crafts and the local flavour unique to each area.

If you appreciate historical objects, you will find vibrant meeting points in the Feiras de Velharias (Antique markets) which occur throughout the Algarve. There, patient browsing of objects on display will reward you with real bargains.

Moreover, walking through an open-air market can be relaxing.  It will be hard to return home with empty arms, but whatever you buy will certainly be memorable.
