The “Boa Esperança” Caravel (Caravel of Good Hope)

The “Boa Esperança” Caravel (Caravel of Good Hope)

Learning about the discoveries in a true to life setting

The first caravels of the age of Discovery left from the Algarve, and it was here that Henry the Navigator invented the ships used by the Portuguese to explore the oceans.  The Latin Caravel, also known as the Caravel of the Prince or Caravel of the Discoveries, was the ship of Moorish origin chosen by Prince Henry for his sea adventures.

Today, the Caravel Boa Esperança (Caravel of Good Hope) exists as a near replica of the original Caravel of the Discoveries, built out of wood by specialists faithful to 15th Century shipbuilding norms, with modern conveniences added for comfort and safety.  The ship displays the symbol of Christ’s Cross on the sails, and the coat of arms of the Prince on the mainmast.

The aim of the Caravel Boa Esperança is to develop the art of sailing, participate in trials and other naval events, and to research the behaviour and manoeuvre of ancient caravels.  Since its launch on 28th April 1990, it has visited Northern European and Mediterranean ports, and has a regular programme of school visits.

The Caravel gives added value to Tourism in the Algarve, drawing many tourists who can go on board to discover the glories of past explorations.
