Bastions of Algarvian worship

The Algarve possesses a significant religious heritage.  Among the many churches spread across the region, some deserve mention because of their architectural value and historical interest.

The Mother Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, of the 13th Century, which replaced the Tavira Mosque, is decorated with three altarpieces in different styles.

Faro Cathedral, dating back to the 13th Century, retains from its original design a frontispiece tower and a Gothic arch door.  The two side chapels, the 16th Century altar and the baroque organ were later additions.

The Mother Church of São Clemente in Loulé, built in the 14th Century on the site of an old Mosque proudly displays its bell tower, adapted from a Moslem minaret, and Gothic Main door.

In the ancient Cathedral of Silves, built in the 13th Century, there is a beautiful apse in red sandstone and the ceiling ornaments with the Royal Coat of Arms of the Avis Dynasty.

The Church of Santo António in Lagos, dates back to the 18th Century. With one nave, the church houses a magnificent collection of engravings.

At Sagres Fort, the little Church of Lady of our Grace occupies the site of an older church, the Church of Santa Maria, which was founded by Henry the Navigator but destroyed by the English privateer Sir Francis Drake.
