Lace work and Bobbin lace

Lace work and Bobbin lace

Exquisite lace

There is a popular saying that, “where there are nets, there is also lace”.  This holds true for the Algarve. The main craft in the south of Portugal - bobbin lace made with two or five needles; crochet with hook needle and knitted net lace - continues to decorate the home and clothing as a refined adornment.

In Castro Marim, bobbin lace continues to be patiently woven by women, who keep this Flemish tradition alive. In Azinhal and specific to this area, lace edging is produced.  In Olhão and Fuzeta, lace made with two or five needles is more common. The first is a mesh similar to fishermen’s nets, which is then decorated with different motifs.  Crochet with a hook needle, famous in Loulé, allows for a greater variety of items.   Net lace or mesh, characteristic of coastal regions, is made with cotton thread and a mesh assistant (wooden ruler), with the mesh stretched on an embroidery frame and needle point stitching made in various motifs.
