Get to know a different Algarve; silent and colourful
The Algarve offers you the perfect opportunity to go diving and enjoy the underwater marvels of the ocean in a number of places, whether you are an experienced diver or a complete beginner. For the sake of safety, novice divers in particular should always be accompanied by an expert.
In many coastal spots there are plenty of archaeological remains, vestiges of the intense sea traffic to the Mediterranean that existed over the centuries.
In Boca do Rio, facing Salema beach (Vila do Bispo), there is even a museum devoted to the underwater world, with such archaeological finds on display.
Less demanding, diving close to the coast reveals other attractions, such as the play of sunlight on the crystal waters and the more subdued tones of the cliffs underwater, covered with coloured algae and other underwater creatures.
Apart from the necessary flippers, a simple face mask and a breathing-tube are all you need to spy on these underwater gardens.
Spread throughout the region, in Albufeira, Armação de Pêra, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Portimão, Quarteira, Sagres and Vila do Bispo there are companies offering diving courses and outings. There is plenty of choice for anyone wanting to discover the Algarve in every aspect.
