Perfect conditions for running
At this time, the Algarve boasts six sports facilities that fulfil every need for athletics, and are venues able to host competitions at international level or serve as a base for training to the highest professional standard.
Fitted out with 400 metre athletics tracks with artificial surfaces and eight running lanes, throwing and jumping areas, the Sports Complexes in Vila Real de Santo António and Quarteira, the Municipal Stadium in Vilamoura and the Faro athletics track all vie for the top spot in sports provision.
Designed for training at altitude, a cross-country course with a natural surface is available in Monchique. In Vilamoura there is a grass course for cross-country more than two kilometres long. Both are facilities with different technical specifications to suit any sort of training.
Among the major competitions that form part of the international athletics calendar are: the Grande Prémio dos Reis road race in Faro, which incorporates the Regional Road Racing Championship, and the famous Cross Internacional das Amendoeiras (the “Almond Blossom International Cross-country Race”). In athletics, the Associação de Atletismo do Algarve (Algarve Athletics Association) is the governing body for the various clubs in the region.
