Sun and sea without limit
Beaches which adhere to the Accessible Beach project and comply with its requirements are awarded the “Accessible Beach” flag. Beaches which are designated accessible beaches include Salema, Meia Praia, Porto de Mós, Luz, Alvor, Quarteira, Monte Gordo and Manta Rota.
At these eight beaches, facilities for disabled people include: wheelchair ramps, wheelchair runners, handrails, disabled toilets, reserved disabled parking, low bar counters, restaurant tables of specific height and obstacle free spaces.
Most of these beaches are also equipped with amphibious wheelchairs and crutches, and other support equipment which allow disabled persons easier access to the sea.
An initiative of the National Commission of Co-ordination for the European Year of People with Disabilities (EYPD), the Accessible Beaches – Beaches for all Project has as its main objectives: to make Portuguese coastal and river beaches accessible to people with limited mobility, to educate the public on issues regarding disability and to provide the disabled and elderly in particular with lists of accessible beaches that are suitable destinations for safe and attractive holidays.
