Different landscapes for different tastes
The Lagos region has emerged as one of the most diversified areas in the Algarve with a mixture of rocky scenery and long, sandy beaches sheltered by the bay. Lagos is called the Costa de Oiro or Golden Coast because of the golden colour of the cliffs which form fantastic caves near the beaches, offering families an opportunity of visiting them by boat.
Praia da Luz (Luz Beach) and Meia Praia, the most famous beaches in the area, boast the Blue Flag and Gold Standard, awarded for environmental quality. They guarantee safety and a tourist infrastructure which provides a range of facilities and entertainment.
Some five kilometres in length, the sands of Meia Praia extend from Lagos Marina to the Alvor Estuary. You can get there by car, train, coach or boat. At the easternmost end of the beach, you are guaranteed peace and quiet as it is less frequented.
Despite being considerably smaller, Dona Ana is also a good choice for families. Here, the rocks on the sandy beach provide good shade, and the calm seas are great for bathing and water games for bathers of all ages.
