Beaches in the Sotavento (Eastern Algarve)

Beaches in the Sotavento (Eastern Algarve)

Calm seas and spectacular nature

In the extreme East, the Algarve returns to the natural landscapes where life is more traditional in terms of architecture and gastronomy. The concept of quality is also applicable to the area’s beaches.

Geared up for holidaymakers of all ages and, in particular, for families, beaches such as Barril, Tavira, Manta Rota and Altura are all recipients of the Blue Flag and Gold Standard awards, confirming their environmental quality and that of their seas and tourist infrastructure.

Access to Barril is by a small, picturesque train that travels through the marshland of the Formosa Estuary (Ria Formosa) to arrive at a well-planned bathing complex with a bar, restaurants and children’s play centre.  Visitors wishing to be by themselves need only take a short walk in any direction.

Tavira Island Beach is excellent for families wanting to camp.  The sands stretching as far as the eye can see, calm waters and good beach facilities more than meet the requirements for families with children and for elderly people.

The calm, warm seas and beaches more than 16 km long, as well as all the entertainment on offer, make Manta Rota and Monte Gordo attractive choices for those who wish to enjoy themselves in a completely safe environment.
