Small paradise islands in the heart of the Formosa Estuary
In this area, the regularity of the coast is interrupted by a network of islands, sand spits and swampy areas.
Faro Island beach, with open-air cafés and restaurants, boasts calm, warm water. Farther east, Barreta Island is also a small paradise with warm, crystal clear water, but not as busy.
Culatra Island has several beaches, all of good quality, co-existing with the traditional fishing population in the town of Culatra. Farol, Culatra and Ponta da Ilha all boast good quality water.
Fuseta Beach and Armona Island are nearest to Olhão. Both have vast stretches of sand and warm water where you can find quieter or busier areas according to your preference. They are very popular among water sports enthusiasts.
Tavira Island has an extensive sandy beach, calm sea and good beach amenities which also include a campsite. There is a regular boat service linking the island to the city of Tavira throughout the year from Quatro Águas, and an additional service in summer from the city itself.
Finally, Cabanas Island, measuring just 70 metres wide and seven kilometres long, is a perfect choice for anyone wanting a more peaceful beach.
